About us

The Mathematical Cognition and Learning Lab

The Mathematical Cognition and Learning Lab of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (MCLL) aims to explore the psychological mechanisms underlying the processing and learning of mathematics and to apply the best available knowledge to facilitate social change in the field of mathematics education. At the same time, we promote open science policies to make research more transparent, reliable, and reproducible.

The Mathematical Cognition and Learning Lab is affiliated with the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and collaborates closely with other units of the University, particularly the Centre for Brain Research, the Centre for Cognitive Science, and the Institute of Psychology. The MCLL has been funded as a Flagship Project of the Excellence Initiative—Jagiellonian University within the Priority Research Area Society of the Future, and its research is further supported by external grants.

The core facility of the MCLL is equipped with six desktop stations for behavioral testing of human participants, a high-end EyeLink 1000 Plus eye-tracking system, a PLUX Biosignals kit for elementary psychophysiology (EMG, EDA, HR), a FLIR thermal imaging camera, and several Meta Quest 2 & 3 virtual reality headsets. For behavioral research on insects, the MCLL uses custom-made arenas and mazes (e.g., produced using 3D printing technology), as well as machine-learning-based movement tracking methods.

If you are interested in research collaboration or looking for expert services in the scope of evidence-based mathematics education, feel free to contact us.
